The stretch of Pusa Road that runs along the southern edge of Karol Bagh is lined with a zany set of large desi deco bungalows. Karol Bagh as a whole is a treasure trove of buildings in the desi deco style and its contemporaneous “proto-modernist” style (in the Indian context). Continue reading

This road abuts the Deputy Ganj neighborhood, and leads out from the center of Sadar Bazaar to Rani Jhansi Road. The architecture along the road is stylistically different from that on Sadar Thana Road and in Basti Harphool Singh and Deputy Ganj, and is mostly from the decades preceding the 1930s. Deputy Ganj is a gem of a neighborhood. Like the stretch of Sadar Thana Road and Basti Harphool Singh that I covered in preceding posts, I was quite amazed to come across this urban space in Sadar Bazaar. I had not expected anything like this in the heart of Delhi. Continue reading
This neighborhood is located just west of Sadar Thana Road, between Idgah Road and Ahata Kidara Road. From the satellite image of this area (link in next paragraph) it becomes obvious that this was a planned neighborhood surrounded by more haphazard urban growth. Continue reading
